Scotland's Fans Bring Energy to Boston Amid Travel Woes

The Tartan Army has arrived in Boston, ready to make their mark as they kick off their World Cup journey. However, not all Scottish supporters are able to join in the festivities, as some face unexpected travel difficulties. The lively sounds of bagpipes and jubilant chants filled the Dubliner pub in downtown Boston on Tuesday, where many fans have gathered to celebrate. “I think I’ve been in this pub for at least 78 hours since we got here,” remarked fan Ben Bunney, summing up the enthusiasm of the crowd. Another fan exclaimed, “It’s absolutely mental.”

As Scotland seeks to break their 28-year World Cup drought this weekend, fans are soaking up all the city has to offer. One supporter shared, “You’ll be embraced. If you embrace Boston, they’ll embrace you.” However, not all fans are able to partake in the excitement. Kenny Smith, a devoted fan from Scotland, expressed his frustration after his temporary travel waiver was unexpectedly denied this week. “I got basically shown the red card in football terms,” he said during a Zoom call.

Smith reported that this denial occurred without any explanation and that several hundred fellow fans have faced similar issues. He is now racing against time to secure a visa to enter the U.S. but has struggled to obtain clear guidance from the embassy. “Here I am all booked up and I can’t go,” he lamented. “We’re probably the only nation you see never causing trouble at these events.”

In Boston, fans are aware of the travel troubles affecting some of their compatriots. Johnny Duffey noted, “A lot of them have said there have been technical issues and whatnot,” while Bunney added, “It’s annoying, but it’s going to happen.” Despite these challenges, the atmosphere remains upbeat, with Duffey stating, “We’re here for the party man. We dinna care about how we do in the competition. We’re here to have a good time and put our stamp on the place.”

Scotland's first World Cup match since 1998 is set for Saturday against Haiti at Boston Stadium. This is an evolving story, and updates will be provided as new information emerges. For breaking news alerts, download the FREE Boston 25 News app and follow them on social media.
