Scranton Prep's Rully Overcomes Injury to Energize Offense Ahead of Key Playoff Matchup
Jack Rully showcased his remarkable skills when Scranton Prep secured a significant victory over a well-respected team within the Wyoming Valley Conference in early April. The talented junior had been gaining momentum, netting four goals for the second time in just a week, contributing to an impressive 18-8 triumph against Wyoming Seminary. However, during practice, Rully experienced a strain in his hamstring that sidelined him for nearly two weeks.
Despite the setback, Rully remained dedicated to his recovery. Upon returning to the field, he quickly reestablished himself as a vital contributor to the Cavaliers' formidable offense. As Scranton Prep prepares to face Twin Valley, the third-place team from District 3, in the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals, Rully is eager to make an impact. “We need to go in with confidence and play like we have been playing,” he remarked. “If we get down, just never give up and never lose hope.”
Lacrosse has been Rully's primary athletic pursuit since his father, Jayson, a former standout at Morristown-Beard School in New Jersey, introduced him to the sport. He has honed his skills through participation in True Lehigh Valley and True Mid-Atlantic training programs. “I take every practice seriously, and I work hard to get better,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of mastering fundamental skills like passing and catching.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 205 pounds, Rully combines size with sharp instincts on the field. After returning from his injury, he quickly made his presence felt, scoring two goals in a game against Bethlehem Freedom and contributing to a 25-1 victory over Tunkhannock with one goal and three assists. As the season progressed, he continued to battle through discomfort, ultimately scoring four goals and assisting two in a decisive 20-4 win over Dallas.
Rully's resilience shone through during the District 2 playoffs, where he played a crucial role in a hard-fought 15-14 overtime victory against Abington Heights, preserving the team's undefeated record. “I took two weeks off before the playoffs and got to 100 percent. I haven’t felt anything since and feel really good,” he stated, reflecting on his recovery journey.
Last week, Rully played a key part in Scranton Prep's historic 7-6 overtime win against Lower Dauphin, marking the program's second victory in PIAA history. As they prepare for a challenging match against Twin Valley, Rully acknowledges the strong camaraderie within the team. “It’s really been a great season. I have learned a lot from the older guys. This team is very close, and that helps in all our games,” he noted.
