Serena Williams' HSBC Championships Journey Concludes on a Disappointing Note
Over the past weekend, Serena Williams shared that her motivation for returning to professional tennis stemmed from a desire for her daughters, Olympia, age eight, and Adira, age two, to witness her in action. "I’ve won more than most people have in their whole lives, so it’s not that important to me, and it’s important that I keep reminding myself of that, because I don’t have anything to prove," the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion stated. "I don’t have anything to lose, and everything here to just to gain.”
The 44-year-old made her comeback at the HSBC Championships as a wild card entry in London, playing her first match since the 2022 US Open. With her family in attendance, Williams achieved her goal of sharing the experience with her children. Together with Canadian star Victoria Mboko, 19, the duo demonstrated impressive synergy, securing a straight-set victory against Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe. They were set to face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the doubles quarterfinals on Thursday.
Unfortunately, the momentum was cut short when Mboko suffered a knee injury during her singles match against Karolína Plíšková on Wednesday, forcing her to retire and withdraw from the tournament. This unexpected turn of events prematurely ended Williams’ comeback.
Displaying remarkable composure, Williams maintained a positive outlook, emphasizing the joy of playing tennis and serving as a role model for her children. She shared a carousel of photos on Instagram, featuring a smiling Olympia watching her serve. "Some moments mean more than trophies [red heart emoji] @olympiaohanian," she wrote. Additionally, she sent well wishes to Mboko in a story post, affirming, "You’re an incredible talent, and you’ll be back out there in no time.”
For her supporters, there is good news as Williams' journey is far from over. She is set to compete in the Berlin Tennis Open next week, where she plans to partner with Karolina Muchova in doubles. "Every tournament I add to my schedule right now feels special, and Berlin is no exception," Williams remarked. "I’m excited to compete in front of the German fans and continue building momentum throughout the grass-court season."
