Shaler Clinches PIAA Class 5A Softball Title with Dominant Win Over Abington Heights
UNIVERSITY PARK — Throughout the postseason, Adrianna Condrad has skillfully navigated through challenging situations on the mound. However, during Thursday's PIAA Class 5A Softball Championship, the Shaler Titans broke through in the second inning, ultimately leading to a convincing 10-0 victory against Abington Heights at Penn State University's Beard Field. The game concluded in just five innings due to the mercy rule, spurred by a grand slam from Haley Machajewski.
This triumph marks the third state championship for the District 7 champion Lady Titans, who previously secured titles in 2004 and 2006. “They broke through and we made a couple small mistakes,” remarked Abington Heights coach John Kelly. “That’s all it takes in a game against a really good team. You make one or two mistakes and they compound.”
For the District 2 champions, the game ended a remarkable season as they reached their first-ever state final. Unfortunately, they struggled offensively against Shaler's ace, Bria Bosiljevac, who is committed to Indiana University. The Lady Comets managed just one hit and had only four players reach base, with Eva Kane starting the game with a walk before being caught stealing.
Shaler's big inning came in the second, sparked by Bosiljevac drawing a walk. The Titans loaded the bases, leading to Olivia Gieraltowski’s walk that put Shaler on the scoreboard. After a series of mishaps for Abington Heights, including defensive errors, the Titans quickly extended their lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the third, Shaler increased its advantage to 5-0, and during the fourth inning, a dropped fly ball allowed Machajewski to score. Kelly replaced Condrad with Bristos to start the fifth, but the Titans capitalized on the opportunity, leading to Machajewski's grand slam that sealed the game. “Off the bat, I knew. That was probably one of the best hits I’ve had in my life,” Machajewski said, expressing her joy in winning the championship with her teammates.
Despite the defeat, Coach Kelly expressed immense pride in his team. “It’s a tough way to go. But I’ve been doing this a long time and this has been the best season,” he stated, reflecting on a memorable journey with his players.
