Sharks Goaltender Christian Kirsch Captures Memorial Cup and Hap Emms Trophy
Christian Kirsch, a rising star in the San Jose Sharks organization, made history on Sunday night by becoming only the third European goaltender to secure the Memorial Cup. His triumph came as the Kitchener Rangers claimed their first title in 23 years, defeating the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League with a commanding score of 6-2.
In addition to the championship, Kirsch was honored with the Hap Emms Memorial Trophy, awarded to the tournament's best goaltender. Throughout the competition, the Swiss goalie excelled, allowing only six goals over four games, which resulted in an impressive 1.50 goals against average and a .952 save percentage. His flawless record of 4-0 speaks volumes about his performance.
Expressing his disbelief after the match, Kirsch stated, "It doesn't feel real right now. It's unbelievable. What a great group. [We put in] so much hard work, and it all paid off." His contributions did not go unnoticed, as he was also named to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team, alongside teammates Sam O'Reilly, Matias Vanhanen, Jack Pridham, Cameron Reid, and Landon DuPont.
When reflecting on the Rangers' success, Kirsch attributed much of their achievement to the coaching staff. "Mainly the coaching staff," the 19-year-old remarked. "They're the best, from the head coach to the assistant coaches, and I mean, especially for me, the goalie coach. He's unbelievable. We work every day, and they made the difference."
After a standout season in the Ontario Hockey League, Kirsch is set to leave Kitchener and will join Quinnipiac University for the upcoming 2026-27 NCAA season, marking the next step in his promising hockey career.
