Shubman Gill Eyes T20 Comeback Amid Intense Competition

Shubman Gill, who currently captains the Gujarat Titans and leads India in Tests and ODIs, is determined to make a comeback to the national T20I team. As he prepares for the IPL 2026 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gill emphasized his commitment to enhancing his skills despite being sidelined from India's T20 plans.

The 26-year-old opener last featured in a T20 International during the home series against South Africa in December 2025. Following a challenging period in the format, he was omitted from the squad that successfully defended India's title at the T20 World Cup this year. Nonetheless, Gill remains optimistic about his future, stating, "I'd be happy to play if I get picked for the T20 team."

Reflecting on his recent performance, Gill acknowledged his struggles in T20s last year, where he scored only 291 runs in 15 matches with an average of 24.25, his best being 47. This slump led to fierce competition for opening spots, particularly as players like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have solidified their positions, and the emergence of young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has intensified the race.

Despite the challenges, Gill is focused on self-improvement. He remarked, "You know, cricket is such a game that you can never really get perfect, but obviously, you can strive for it, and that's what I try to do." Entering the IPL final with impressive stats—722 runs at an average of 48.13 and a strike rate of 163.72—Gill's recent form could bolster his case for a T20I return.

To maintain his mental sharpness during the season, Gill has concentrated on preparation rather than external distractions. He believes that understanding what he can control is essential for success, both individually and as part of the team. Although a swift return to the T20I squad may be challenging, his performance in the IPL 2026 final could be pivotal in reigniting discussions about his selection.
