Sirens Strengthen Roster in 2026 PWHL Draft, Sidestep Goaltending
The New York Sirens made a splash in the 2026 PWHL Entry Draft held in Detroit, selecting six players to enhance their roster. Notably, general manager Pascal Daoust chose not to address the team's pressing need for a goaltender, a decision that raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike.
Leading the charge for the Sirens was Emma Peschel, a co-captain from Ohio State, who was picked seventh overall. Standing at an impressive 5-foot-10, Peschel is a two-time All-WCHA defender and is expected to make an immediate impact on New York's blue line. She expressed her excitement about joining the PWHL, stating, “Can’t wait. I love playing physical. I love throwing hits when I can.”
In the second round, the Sirens snagged Finnish forward Elisa Holopainen, selected 19th overall. Holopainen is known for her scoring prowess, having topped the SDHL in points during the 2024-25 season. She acknowledged the challenges ahead but is optimistic about her adaptation to the North American style of play: “I think it will be different... but I think I can do a lot with my skating, so I think it will help me.”
The team also added three more forwards: Carina DiAntonio, Katelyn Roberts, and Naomi Boucher, along with defender Grace Wolfe. DiAntonio, a standout at Yale, finished with 26 goals in her senior season and could replace some of the scoring lost by the Sirens. Roberts made history as the first Black woman drafted by the franchise, while Wolfe is expected to provide depth after five seasons at St. Cloud State.
Despite a record eight goalies being drafted this year, the Sirens opted out, a move Daoust explained was intentional. He expressed confidence in existing backups Callie Shanahan and Kaley Doyle and mentioned the possibility of acquiring a third goalie through free agency. This decision comes in light of the recent departure of Kayle Osborne, who had been a significant presence in goal last season.
