Six Golfers Secure Final Berths for the 126th U.S. Open
On Sunday, six golfers officially earned their places in the lineup for the 126th U.S. Open, completing the 156-player roster for the upcoming tournament at Shinnecock Hills. Bud Cauley qualified by placing within the top 60 of the Official World Golf Ranking as of June 15. Meanwhile, Hennie du Plessis, Harry Higgs, Bryan Lee, Jack Schoenberger, and Spencer Tibbits were selected from the first alternate list following Final Qualifying events.
At 36 years old, Cauley will be making his fourth appearance at the U.S. Open. His recent victory at the RBC Canadian Open propelled him from 68th to 40th in the world rankings. In his previous attempts, he has missed the cut twice and recorded a T-63 finish in 2011.
Du Plessis, a 29-year-old golfer from South Africa, is set to make his U.S. Open debut after securing his spot as the first alternate from the Walton Heath Golf Club qualifier. He finished with a 10-under 134 in Surrey, England, and was part of a playoff for the last qualifying position.
Veteran player Harry Higgs, 34, will also return to the U.S. Open for the second time after successfully navigating a 2-for-1 playoff at Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, North Carolina, where he shot impressive rounds of 64 and 66.
Amateur golfer Bryan Lee, 22, gained entry into his second consecutive U.S. Open as the first alternate from Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. He carded a 5-under 137 but fell short in a playoff against Jake Sollon for the final qualifying spot.
Jack Schoenberger, a 23-year-old amateur from Kentucky, will also make his U.S. Open debut as a first alternate from the Ball Ground, Georgia site, while Spencer Tibbits, 27, a former standout at Oregon State, returns for his second U.S. Open appearance after an intense nine-hole playoff at Emerald Valley Golf Club. The tournament is set to commence on Thursday, with J.J. Spaun as the defending champion.
