Smithville's Kaitlyn Carr Secures Second Consecutive OHSAA Title in 3200 Meters
COLUMBUS — As the final lap approached in the Division V girls 3200 meters race held on June 4 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, the announcer captured the moment perfectly: "One lap to go for Kaitlyn Carr...and everyone that's following her." Smithville senior Kaitlyn Carr demonstrated her dominance by pulling ahead of the competition, ultimately clinching her second consecutive OHSAA state championship in the event with a time of 10:52.85.
Despite her impressive victory, Carr expressed a desire for a better performance. "No. I didn't have the race I was hoping to have. I'm just thankful for this opportunity to come out and run," she reflected. "It's been a blessing these past four years to be able to do that. Nothing I can really complain about."
Initially, Carr was in second place after the first lap, but from the second lap onward, she surged ahead, leaving her rivals behind. The reigning Division V 3200 regional and district champion had anticipated a faster time. "I haven't been running well this season. We're figuring out what's wrong," she noted after the race, mentioning that she would soon be competing in Smithville's 4x400 relay just 15 minutes later. "It's in God's hands."
This victory marks Carr's fourth individual state title in track and field, having previously won two championships each in the 3200 and 1600 meters. She is set to pursue her fifth title in the 1600 meters on Friday. Carr expressed relief about not having to race the 3200 meters again at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, saying, "It's bittersweet. My last 3200. I'm definitely glad I don't have to run eight laps around this track again but it's a blessing I could."
