South Bend Cubs Secure Playoff Berth for 2026 Midwest League
The South Bend Cubs are heading to the MiLB High-A Midwest League Playoffs for the first time since 2022. Their playoff spot was confirmed following a 6-4 victory over the Peoria Chiefs on Saturday, June 13. With a record of 37-21, the Cubs clinched the first half championship of the Midwest League's West Division, ensuring their participation in the playoffs set for September.
This marks the franchise's 16th playoff appearance and the fourth since adopting the South Bend Cubs name in 2015. Historically, the team has claimed the High-A playoff title five times, with two of those victories occurring during their previous playoff runs.
The Cubs showcased a powerful performance in the decisive game, exploding for five runs in the opening inning. They hit three home runs, with Josiah Hartshorn and Jose Escobar each contributing two-run homers, while Justin Stransky added a solo shot. Escobar later extended the lead with an RBI single in the fifth inning.
On the mound, Koen Moreno secured the win by pitching the first five innings, while Jackson Brockett closed the game with four innings of solid relief. In the Midwest League, the top team at the season's midway point from each division automatically earns a playoff berth, with the second half of the standings determining additional playoff spots.
The first half of the season concludes on Thursday, June 18, setting the stage for an exciting finish in the Midwest League.
