Western Boone Softball Team Eyes Bright Future After Semistate Runner-Up Finish
WEST LAFAYETTE — The Western Boone softball team’s remarkable journey in the 2026 season will be remembered for their tenacity and determination. Despite struggling with injuries that left them with only nine healthy players in late April, the team rallied together, persevering through a challenging two-week period until their teammates returned.
In last Saturday's semistate semifinal against Central Noble, the Stars found themselves trailing 3-0 entering the sixth inning. However, they staged an impressive comeback, scoring six unanswered runs to extend their postseason run. Facing the defending Class 2A state champion Tecumseh Braves, they encountered a tough opponent who capitalized on an early error to build a seven-run lead. Yet, Western Boone refused to back down, managing to score two runs in the sixth inning thanks to a two-run triple from Raina Lutz, sparked by back-to-back errors from the Braves.
Even when they were down to their last two outs in the seventh, Kensley Blankenship’s walk provided a glimmer of hope. Unfortunately, Tecumseh’s Audrey Seiler struck out the next two batters, securing a 7-2 victory and another state title for the Braves. Despite the loss, the Stars exited Purdue’s Bittinger Stadium with pride. “That was our motto this season: We're not going to quit. We're going down with a fight,” said junior pitcher Mickey Burns, who pitched five innings of relief, allowing two runs and striking out a couple of batters.
Coach Mike Vanderpool echoed the sentiment, stating, “We could have went up and struck out. But no. We came back, had a couple great hits, scored two runs, then in that last inning, put another runner on. … I'm so proud of them.” Throughout the match, the Stars managed to hold the Braves, who had an impressive postseason run differential of 66-1 and had run-ruled five of their previous six opponents, to just seven runs.
Looking ahead, the future appears promising for Western Boone, as they graduate only two seniors, Morganne Grant and Mental Attitude Award recipient Dottie Wilson, both of whom were sidelined this season. The majority of the team, including standout pitchers Burns and Ally Lewis, is expected to return. Lutz, along with Kenzlei Matthews, Addi Lee, and promising freshman Mady Monks, who had an impressive debut with a .375 batting average, will also be back. “I definitely think we'll be back here next year,” Lutz expressed confidently. “One-hundred percent. 100% better. 100% stronger.”
With an enthusiastic core returning, the team is eager to replicate their success. “We all want this experience again,” Burns added. “My senior year, I want to get back here so bad.”
