FIFA Confirms No Offside on Swiss Penalty Despite Viewer Confusion
A technical issue during the World Cup match between Switzerland and Qatar left many viewers bewildered when an onside graphic was not displayed prior to a penalty awarded to Switzerland. The incident arose following a foul by Qatar's goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada on Remo Freuler, leading to a penalty successfully converted by Breel Embolo before Qatar equalized late in the game.
Football experts voiced their frustrations regarding the incident. Gary Neville criticized FIFA's lack of transparency on ITV, suggesting the organization was operating in a "dictatorship" by withholding the lines that would demonstrate the semi-automatic offside system's effectiveness. Ian Wright, another former England international, deemed the situation "scandalous."
Adding to the debate, former Norway World Cup striker Jan Aage Fjørtoft took to X, expressing skepticism about the absence of visual evidence, noting, "They haven’t showed yet ... suspicious. FIFA have 600 cameras, 18 persons in VAR bus. And still we haven’t seen a line or 3D graphic before the penalty situation." He speculated that the officials may have overlooked a second offside check.
Ex-referee Thorsten Kinhofer commented to Germany's ZDF that he would have anticipated an offside call, suggesting the camera angle may have misrepresented the play or that the semi-automated offside line malfunctioned.
In response to the uproar, FIFA released a statement affirming that there was no offside in the play and that the necessary lines had been provided to the video assistant, emphasizing that the technical glitch did not influence the official decision-making process.
