Spain Sets Sights on World Cup Success with Trust and Cohesion

As the reigning champions of Europe, Spain is among the frontrunners for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off on June 11 in North America. Despite their past triumphs, the Spanish national team has struggled to replicate their World Cup success since winning in South Africa in 2010, failing to advance past the knockout stages in subsequent tournaments.

However, the recent victory over England in the UEFA Euro 2024 final has reignited their confidence. The team is now equipped with a deeper understanding of head coach Luis de la Fuente's expectations, as most of the players have been under his guidance for years, having previously coached them at various youth levels. "My relationship with around 90% of the current squad goes back years," de la Fuente remarked in a FIFA interview. "We’ve grown together, and that trust and understanding within the group gives us the confidence to push ourselves as far as we can go."

Spain has remained resilient, not losing a match in regulation time since their Euro victory two years ago. Their only setback was a penalty shootout defeat to Portugal in the 2025 UEFA Nations League final. As they prepare for the World Cup, they must navigate a group featuring Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay, where complacency could prove costly, especially given Saudi Arabia's stunning upset of Argentina in the last tournament.

All eyes will also be on Lamine Yamal, the young star who made waves during Euro 2024. De la Fuente has been instrumental in nurturing Yamal’s talent, emphasizing the importance of balancing football with life lessons. "He’s hungry to grow and improve," de la Fuente said. "That willingness to learn means that he’s very open to receiving advice."

Alongside Yamal, Spain boasts a formidable roster with players like Nico Williams, Ferran Torres, and Mikel Oyarzabal bolstering their attacking options. The midfield is equally strong, featuring talents such as Rodri, Gavi, and Pedri. To secure a successful tournament run, Spain must start strong against Cape Verde, as finishing second in their group could lead to a difficult matchup against likely contenders like Argentina in the knockout stages.

If Spain can navigate the group stages successfully, a path toward their first World Cup semi-final since 2010 could open up, potentially facing teams like Croatia or Colombia in the last-16. With the right approach, La Roja could make this summer one to remember.
