Spencer Strider Exits Early with Arm Discomfort in Braves' Matchup Against Mets

NEW YORK (AP) — Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider departed Friday night’s game against the New York Mets in the fourth inning due to discomfort in his right arm. Strider, who was pitching his eighth game of the season, struggled significantly, surrendering six hits and a season-high seven earned runs over just three innings of work. He managed to strike out three batters but also allowed three home runs, including a grand slam hit by Bo Bichette in the second inning.

During the fourth inning, Strider's velocity noticeably dropped, as he issued a six-pitch walk to MJ Melendez. The fastballs he threw during that at-bat were clocked between 88 and 89 mph, a stark contrast to the 92 to 96 mph range he showcased in the earlier innings. Following a visit from manager Walt Weiss and a trainer, Strider exited the game after a brief discussion.

This season marks Strider's return after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2024, and he had missed the first 34 games while recovering from a strained left oblique. JR Ritchie took over on the mound, allowing a single to Luis Torrens before Bo Bichette's sacrifice fly brought Melendez home a batter later.
