St. Agnes' Claire Wetick breaks TSSAA state record in pole vault

KNOXVILLE - St. Agnes junior Claire Wetick broke the girls pole vault state record at the TSSAA track at field state championship meet for Division II schools on May 20.

Wetick had already clinched first place after clearing the bar at 12 feet. She kept going until she eventually leapt over the 13-foot, 8-inch marker to set the state record at the University of Tennessee's Tom Black Track.

"I'm feeling really happy," Wetick said. "Obviously with pole vault, you always end on a miss. I'm disappointed I didn't get those attempts (at 13-10), but I've just got to be happy with what I did today. I am very happy with my performance and there's always more to come."

This is the second time Wetick has broken the state record this season. She initially broke the record with a jump of 13-6 on April 14. Anderson County's Brittany Bishop was the previous record holder with a 13-0 mark, set in 2019. Wetick set a personal-best of 13 feet and 1¼ inches at an earlier meet on April 8.

"Staying calm," Wetick said on what led to her success. "Having a good run, a plan and doing what I do in practice. Translating that here, because if I do anything different it's not going to work."
