The St. Louis Cardinals showcased their offensive prowess Tuesday night, overpowering the New York Mets in a commanding 7-0 victory at Citi Field. The game marked a significant performance for pitcher Dustin May, who finally received the support he needed from his teammates.
The Cardinals struck first, beginning in the third inning when Nolan Gorman earned a walk, followed by Nathan Church’s double that advanced him to second. JJ Wetherholt then contributed with a single to right-center, bringing both Gorman and Church home. An errant pitch hit Ivan Herrera, setting the stage for Jordan Walker, who doubled to left, allowing Wetherholt to score and giving St. Louis a 3-0 advantage. The scoring continued when Lars Nootbaar grounded out but allowed Herrera to dash home, extending the lead to 4-0.
In the fifth inning, St. Louis further solidified their lead. After Herrera's single—thanks to a misplay by Mets center fielder Ewing—Alec Burleson hit a two-run homer, putting the Cardinals ahead 6-0. May's performance on the mound was equally impressive, as he tossed six innings, allowing only four hits while striking out six and walking one without yielding an earned run.
The Cardinals didn’t ease off the gas, adding another run in the seventh inning when Herrera hit a double, later scoring on another double by Burleson, pushing the score to 7-0. Nathan Church, back from the injured list, excelled at the plate with three hits, while Burleson extended his hitting streak to nine games. In relief, Justin Bruihl and closer Matt Svanson ensured a smooth finish, keeping the Mets at bay.
St. Louis aims to clinch the series against New York on Wednesday night, with Andre Pallante set to take the mound. Meanwhile, the Mets will counter with Christian Scott, who will face a tough challenge against the formidable Cardinals lineup. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 PM Central Time, with the game broadcast available on Cardinals.tv.
