Steelers Face Pressure Amid Potential Roster Changes
The Pittsburgh Steelers are navigating a season filled with uncertainty, particularly with the introduction of new players to the roster. The recent trade of Myles Garrett by the Cleveland Browns has raised questions about the stability of several key players in the NFL, including those in Pittsburgh. While the Steelers are viewed as a stronger team compared to the Browns, their Super Bowl aspirations remain in question.
In the wake of the Garrett trade, speculation has emerged regarding the potential departure of standout linebacker T.J. Watt. Although trading Watt at this moment seems improbable, the pressure is mounting for him and others on the team to deliver performances that meet expectations. As noted by Albert Breer, “So what does this mean for Watt’s future? Does Herbig leapfrogging Highsmith contractually create a problem? Could Sawyer’s continued emergence make someone expendable?”
Last season, Watt played 69.8% of the defensive snaps despite missing three games, while teammates Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig, and Quincy Sawyer contributed significantly as well. This creates a competitive environment for the defense, providing new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham with considerable options. Breer pointed out, “The bottleneck of talent certainly makes things interesting.”
While the idea of trading Watt may not be far-fetched, it’s important to acknowledge that the Steelers could have commanded a higher return for him in the past. Nonetheless, if the organization believes a trade is necessary for their long-term strategy, they should pursue it. Ultimately, the decision will hinge on the team’s performance throughout the season, as Watt remains a crucial component of their future plans.
