Stephanie White Addresses Caitlin Clark's Early Exit During Loss to Fire

Following a disappointing 100-84 defeat against Portland on Saturday night, Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White shed light on the decision to substitute Caitlin Clark early in the first quarter. This move coincided with a pivotal offensive surge from the Fire that ultimately influenced the game's outcome.

At the time of the substitutions, Clark had contributed two points, with a shooting record of 1-for-2, along with three assists in just under three minutes of play. After a Portland timeout with 7:20 left in the first quarter, the Fire surged with a 13-2 scoring run before Clark was reintegrated into the game at the 3:38 mark, with Portland leading 17-10. "Well, AB is still in a minutes restriction, so that's why she's coming out," White explained, referring to the decision to substitute both Clark and Aliyah Boston. "And that's typically around the same time that we've taken Caitlin out before."

Unfortunately for the Fever, the return of Clark and Boston did little to stem the tide, as Portland continued to dominate, extending their run to 27-7 by the end of the first quarter. Boston has been on a minutes restriction since the season began, following a lower right leg injury sustained during her Unrivaled season in February. White has also indicated that Clark's playing time will be monitored this season due to the former Hawkeye's injury-laden 2025 campaign, where she only appeared in 13 games.

In Saturday's game, Clark faced foul trouble, resulting in a season-low of six points on 1-for-7 shooting, along with four successful free throws out of five attempts, six assists, two rebounds, and one steal in 22 minutes. "It's hard when you foul, and you know, I just need to do a better job being straight up, keep the defender in front of me… just move my feet a little bit better," Clark reflected after the game. "But, it's just basketball, just a game, you know? Learn from it, watch the film, and come back next game and be ready to go."

With a five-day break before their next match against the Atlanta Dream on June 4 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the Fever will need to regroup and focus on improving their performance as the early season progresses.
