Steven Baker Secures Victory at Blue Whale Run Following Marathon Triumph

CATOOSA — Just weeks after his impressive win at the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, Steven Baker showcased his endurance and speed once again, clinching the title at the Blue Whale Run. The Tulsa athlete dominated the 5K race on a muggy Saturday morning, finishing the course in 15 minutes and 31 seconds, a full two minutes ahead of second-place runner Carter Gibson from Claremore.

“That’s pretty good on this course,” Baker remarked after his victory. The race, which attracted a total of 505 competitors, took place near the recently upgraded Blue Whale Park along historic Route 66. Baker's performance is part of a remarkable series of races that kicked off with his marathon triumph, where he clocked a winning time of 2:23:18.

While Baker's personal best for the 5K stands at 15:11, he felt content with Saturday's outcome, especially considering the course's challenging hills. He noted, “I did a 5-miler recently, and I looked down at my 5K split, and it was 15:02,” adding that the flatter terrain had been a significant factor in that performance. The race director had warned participants about the hilly nature of the course, which, combined with the humidity, posed an extra challenge.

Baker's quick recovery from the marathon was notable; he usually requires around six weeks to recuperate but only took three days off before resuming his training. “I kept the momentum going into these races,” he explained, expressing excitement about the upcoming summer events despite the increasing humidity making conditions tougher.

Gibson, who finished second, had competed less than a day earlier in a mile event, suggesting he may have approached the 5K as more of a workout than a full effort. Notably, two high school runners also excelled, with Andy DeSpain from Claremore Christian placing seventh and Ian Budler from Verdigris finishing tenth.

Baker was drawn to this particular race after a recommendation, appreciating its family-friendly vibe, especially as his daughter, just five years old, begins to show an interest in running. “I thought it would be a fun one for my family,” he commented, highlighting the event's appeal. With plans to participate in more races this summer, Baker is eager to keep his winning streak alive, with his next race set for the Muscogee Nation Festival in Okmulgee on June 26.
