Sunderland's Historic American Tour: A Glimpse into 1955

Régis Le Bris and his Sunderland squad are gearing up for an exhilarating pre-season journey to the United States this summer, echoing the historic travels of former manager Bill Murray. Murray, who took the helm at Sunderland in 1939, transformed the club into one of football's most glamorous teams during his tenure.

Following the conclusion of the 1954/1955 season, Sunderland embarked on a series of lucrative exhibition matches in North America. As the team ventured across the Atlantic, tales of their adventures and escapades began to emerge, with Murray himself keeping fans informed through a series of letters published in The Sunderland Echo and Shipping Gazette. An excerpt from one such letter, dated May 31, 1955, reads: "I am afraid this is the last letter from the big city, as we leave for Montreal on Friday morning."

Murray noted how the team had grown accustomed to their surroundings in New York City, observing that newcomers to their hotel were often overlooked despite their flamboyant attire. The Sunderland players even found an inventive solution to the costs of haircuts, appointing a local Glaswegian as their unofficial barber.

Highlighting their travels, Murray shared that their visit to Philadelphia was particularly enjoyable, coinciding with a military parade amid the sweltering heat. The squad also toured the Steven Gerard College, which supports boys without fathers, a visit that coincided with Founders’ Day. Sunderland's match against the Uhrik Truckers ended in a 3-1 victory, adding to the team's accomplishments during their American tour.

Additionally, the Old Timers’ Soccer Association of Philadelphia honored Sunderland with a plaque, and the event showcased the strong ties between American and British football. Murray humorously recounted the unique experience of a double kickoff by local dignitaries before the match. As their tour came to a close, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to the city and its residents for their warm hospitality, stating, "TO NEW YORK CITY, WE SAY THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL THREE WEEKS."
