Tanner Bibee Secures First Win as Guardians Blank Rangers 6-0
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Tanner Bibee celebrated his first victory of the season in his 14th outing, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a commanding 6-0 win over the Texas Rangers on Saturday. The 27-year-old right-hander allowed just three hits over eight innings, displaying a strong performance that ended a long winless streak.
Bibee (1-7) had not secured a victory in a franchise-record 13 consecutive regular-season starts, a dry spell that dated back to his win against Detroit on September 24. He needed only 87 pitches to complete his eight innings, striking out three batters and walking two. Remarkably, Bibee faced games earlier this season where he received little to no run support, having been backed by one or zero runs in 10 of his previous starts.
The Guardians' pitching staff recorded their third shutout of the season, all occurring away from home, with Tim Herrin closing out the game with a hitless ninth inning. This marked the fifth time Texas has been shut out this season, with four of those instances happening in the last 24 games. The Rangers have struggled to maintain a .500 record, having last been even at 16-16 on May 1.
José Ramírez ignited the offense by hitting a home run in the second inning, sending a ball into the home bullpen beyond right field. Brayan Rocchio, batting ninth, added to the scoring in the fifth inning with a homer off the right-field foul pole during a four-run rally. This season, Rocchio has matched his personal best with five home runs. The Guardians also benefited from RBI hits by Chase DeLauter, Kyle Manzardo, and Daniel Schneemann in that same inning.
In the eighth inning, Rangers reliever Luis Curvelo exited the game after sustaining a hit to his thigh from a hard line drive off the bat of Patrick Bailey. Looking ahead, the Rangers are set to have right-hander Jacob deGrom (4-4, 3.48 ERA) take the mound on Sunday, marking his first career start against the Guardians— the only team he has yet to face. The Guardians will counter with lefty Joey Cantillo (4-2, 3.92).
