Teacher Leverages Autism to Excel as Referee

Tom Halloway balances his role as an educator at Willows Special School in Rotherham with a budding career as a football referee. Amid the lively atmosphere of the school's sports hall, students clad in vibrant yellow uniforms engage in an intense three-on-three football match, while Halloway, dressed in black, enthusiastically provides guidance from the sidelines.

Once an "unmotivated" autistic high school student with only one GCSE to his name, Halloway's journey has been transformative. "I didn't really do very well at school," he admits, recalling his struggles, particularly with math, which he failed multiple times. "With my autism, one plus one is always two, but I just couldn't grasp shapes or angles." After significant effort, including private tutoring, he eventually conquered his math challenges, paving the way for his future in education.

Rachel Booth, the headteacher at Willows, recognizes Halloway's potential, stating, "For Tom to have additional needs and say to the children, 'it's not stopped me, look at what I've done with my life' – is brilliant." Halloway's experiences offer inspiration to his students, demonstrating that determination can lead to success.

Reflecting on his responsibilities, Halloway emphasizes his understanding of the challenges faced by his pupils. "I was once in their shoes," he notes. "I'm more aware of what they may be struggling with." His openness about living with autism fosters a supportive environment for his students and their families.

While Halloway once aspired to be a professional athlete, he found his passion for football officiating as he transitioned from a competitive running career, which was interrupted by health issues. "Refereeing filled the void left from running," he explains. "When one door closes, another one opens." His commitment has quickly propelled him through the ranks, and he is now a level 3 referee officiating games in the Northern Premier League and serving as an assistant in the National League North.

Combining his teaching duties with his refereeing commitments, Halloway has managed to achieve significant milestones in a short period. "I've gained four promotions in three years," he shares proudly, alongside accolades such as a diversity award at Wembley Stadium. Although he enjoys refereeing, he remains devoted to his teaching career, recognizing the importance of both roles in his life.
