Tennessee's 2027 Pitching Staff Gains Momentum with Key Returns
The Tennessee Volunteers are making strides in shaping their baseball roster for the 2027 season, under the guidance of head coach Josh Elander. As the transfer portal opens up, the focus shifts to not only attracting new talent but also retaining their standout players. On Tuesday, Elander celebrated significant victories by securing the return of two key pitchers.
According to VolQuest, both Cam Appenzeller and Landon Mack have committed to returning for another season, solidifying two-thirds of a formidable starting rotation. Mack, who started 12 games last season, is expected to reclaim his role in the weekend lineup. The Rutgers transfer showcased his abilities with a 4.67 ERA over 61.2 innings, accumulating 77 strikeouts against 25 walks. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to arm soreness, sidelining him during the final weeks and postseason.
Appenzeller, a promising true freshman, had a strong start in SEC play but faced challenges as the season progressed. He made 20 appearances, including two starts, and recorded a 4.76 ERA across 56.2 innings, with 64 strikeouts and 15 walks. With two key pitchers set to return, Elander now turns his attention to improving the bullpen, which struggled throughout the 2026 season.
The upcoming season holds potential for the Volunteers as they aim to enhance their roster and build on the successes of their returning players.
