Texas Longhorns Poised for Rushing Breakout with Two 700-Yard Backs in 2026

With just 98 days remaining before the Texas Longhorns face off against Texas State, anticipation is building for the upcoming football season. As the countdown to kickoff begins, fans are eager for insights into what they can expect from the team, particularly from the running back position, which has seen significant changes over the offseason.

Texas has revamped its running back lineup by bringing in transfers Hollywood Smothers from NC State and Raleek Brown from Arizona State, alongside freshman Derrek Cooper. This fresh talent could potentially transform the rushing game, and predictions suggest that the Longhorns might boast two rushers each exceeding 700 yards in the 2026 season.

In the previous season, Tre Wisner led the team with just under 600 rushing yards, followed by Arch Manning with 399. This year, Manning is the only returning player from last season's top rushers. With the addition of Smothers, Brown, and Cooper, expectations are high for a significant improvement in both balance and production from the running game.

Last season, Wisner had the best average at 4.6 yards per carry. In contrast, Smothers and Brown showcased their speed, averaging 5.9 and 6.1 yards per carry, respectively. With both players coming off impressive seasons—Brown with 1,100 yards and Smothers just shy of 1,000—their impact on the Longhorns' rushing attack is anticipated to be substantial.

While the offensive line's effectiveness remains a variable factor, with a focus on pass protection, there is optimism that run blocking will also see improvement. If the offensive line gels, head coach Steve Sarkisian could lead one of the most dynamic rushing offenses in the nation. The prospect of two 700-yard rushers could elevate Texas's offensive game to new heights, making it a formidable challenge for opposing defenses.
