Thunder Aim to Prevent Lakers from Acquiring Luguentz Dort

The Los Angeles Lakers will need to strategize creatively this offseason to strengthen their roster and enhance their chances of competing for a championship. With notable players on their radar, they may have to explore alternative options as they rebuild their team.

Following their elimination in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder are bracing for a salary cap challenge. As contract extensions for Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren are set to take effect soon, the Thunder may have to part ways with at least one key player this summer. Among those potentially on the chopping block is Luguentz Dort, who holds a team option for the upcoming season.

Dort could be an asset for the Lakers due to his defensive skills and ability to make three-pointers. However, CBS Sports' Sam Quinn reports that the Thunder might prioritize keeping Dort away from Los Angeles. "If the Thunder can get something for Dort? Great. But there aren't many teams positioned to take on his contract since he's making more than the mid-level exception, and Oklahoma City's preference is probably to keep him away from the Lakers, who would have the cap space to sign him outright if that option is declined," Quinn stated.

During the regular season, Dort averaged 8.3 points per game with a 34.4% success rate from beyond the arc. However, his shooting struggles were evident in the playoffs, where he converted only 30.8% of his three-point attempts, and a disappointing 20% in the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. While he has shown the ability to shoot effectively in the past, his inconsistency raises concerns about his reliability going forward.

For the Lakers, the need for dynamic perimeter defenders is critical, particularly those who can contribute offensively. Even if Dort becomes available, he may not be the solution they seek, as the team already features several defensive players who struggle with shooting, including Jarred Vanderbilt, Jake LaRavia, and Marcus Smart.
