T.J. Watt Embraces Versatility in Patrick Graham's Defensive Scheme
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt, who has predominantly played on the left side throughout his career, is preparing to expand his role in the team's new defensive system under coordinator Patrick Graham. Last season, Watt took just 10 snaps on the right side, with Alex Highsmith typically occupying that position. However, Watt has hinted at a shift in his approach, stating he will be more adaptable moving forward.
"I think in the past, it was a little bit more about me being stubborn," Watt remarked in a video interview with the Post-Gazette Sports. "I think this new system allows [more of that, because] a lot of it is built in, so I really can’t say no. I have to move with it." He emphasized that players within the defense are expected to be flexible, learning not just their specific positions but also the overall structure of the defensive front.
Watt, who led the NFL with 19 sacks in 2023, has faced challenges in recent seasons, recording only 18.5 sacks over the past two years, including seven in 2025 during a period when he missed three games. The introduction of Graham could provide a much-needed boost to Watt's performance at this stage in his career.
"It's been a lot, not going to lie to you," Watt acknowledged about adapting to the new scheme. "It's been a lot of studying, a lot of learning, a lot on the iPad." While he adjusts to new teammates and coaching staff, he remains optimistic about the changes, noting that practices have become more intense and beneficial, despite the increasing difficulty of maintaining peak performance as he ages.
