Topuria and Gaethje Clash Ahead of Historic UFC Event at the White House

In a dramatic display of rivalry, Ilia Topuria confronted Justin Gaethje during a press conference held near the Lincoln Memorial, just days before their highly anticipated unification bout. Topuria, the undefeated lightweight champion, engaged in a brief altercation with Gaethje, the interim titleholder, as both fighters expressed confidence in their upcoming match. At 29 years old, Topuria boldly claimed, “I’m going to knock his lights out in the first round,” while Gaethje chuckled at the tension, saying, “Look where we're at, look at this beautiful view and you want to act like an animal?”

The press event took place in Washington, D.C., two days before the unique UFC Freedom 250, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday and celebrating 250 years of American independence. The Lincoln Memorial served as a striking backdrop, with the fighters receiving a ceremonial welcome from the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets before taking their seats. While the main event featured Topuria and Gaethje, the co-main event will see Ciryl Gane of France face Brazil's Alex Pereira for the interim heavyweight title. Should Pereira triumph, he would become the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in three separate weight classes.

Topuria also praised Pereira, labeling him a "GOAT" (greatest of all time) for his impressive accomplishments in the sport. “He’s the goat already… he’s going to join that list without any doubt,” Topuria remarked. The press conference was occasionally interrupted by heavyweight fighter Josh Hokit, prompting Topuria to request that the UFC cut off his microphone.

The event faced a one-hour delay due to adverse weather conditions, with UFC officials advising attendees to monitor local forecasts. There are fears that thunderstorms might disrupt the Sunday event. UFC President Dana White, however, remains resolute, stating, “We are fighting on Sunday on the White House lawn, no matter what.” This UFC show is significant as it marks the first professional sporting event to be held on the White House grounds.

With an investment of around $60 million, White has expressed that this event could potentially be the "biggest and most historic sporting event of all time." The UFC received a legal green light for the event after a federal lawsuit aimed at halting it was dismissed, allowing the celebration to move forward amidst the nation's historic landmarks.
