Trei Cruz Makes Major League Debut, Continuing Family Legacy in Baseball
DETROIT (AP) — Trei Cruz etched his name in his family's baseball legacy with his major league debut on Friday night, a moment made even more special by the presence of his father and grandfather. The Detroit Tigers rookie took to right field against the Chicago White Sox and batted ninth, contributing to the team's narrow 4-3 victory.
As Cruz stepped onto the field in the first inning, he became part of an elite group, as his family became the fifth to have three generations play in Major League Baseball. His grandfather, Jose Cruz Sr., and father, José Cruz Jr., watched proudly as Trei took this significant step in his career. “I am really happy for Trei and his family,” remarked Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “From a baseball standpoint, how cool is it for a family to have three generations of players? It's a rarity.”
The Cruz family joins the ranks of notable lineages in the sport, including the Bells, Boones, Colemans, and Hairstons. Jose Cruz Sr. had an impressive career, playing for teams like the St. Louis Cardinals and the Houston Astros, where he accumulated 2,251 hits and 165 home runs. “This is my dream come true,” he expressed during the Tigers' broadcast. “I wanted to see our third generation make it, and I'm so proud of Trei. He has worked so hard to get here, and I hope he is here to stay.”
José Cruz Jr., who debuted with the Seattle Mariners in 1997, reflected on the excitement surrounding Trei's achievement. “It has been such an exciting 24 hours since we got the news,” he said. “I'm so happy for Trei to get this moment.” Trei, who is approaching his 28th birthday on July 5, finally got his opportunity after Wenceel Perez suffered facial injuries in a training accident.
Though his debut was less than ideal—he struck out in all three of his at-bats before being replaced for defensive purposes in the eighth inning—Trei's journey to the majors is a testament to his perseverance. “He's had to work hard to get here,” Hinch noted. “Not everyone's journey to the big leagues is a smooth ride. I love that he's been tough enough to handle it.”
