Trent Williams Hints His New Contract with 49ers May Signal End of Career

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Trent Williams, the standout left tackle for the San Francisco 49ers, has expressed that the contract he inked in April could be the final chapter in his illustrious football journey. The two-year deal, valued at $50 million and set to run through the 2027 season, could see him stepping away from the game when he turns 39.

During his first press conference since signing the contract, Williams shared his mixed emotions about the future. “It’s scary. It’s scary,” he remarked, contemplating the idea of either playing until he can no longer perform or retiring while still at the top of his game. He also emphasized his desire to spend more quality time with his children, particularly as his eldest daughter prepares for college in just a couple of years. “As a father, you feel like, ‘Dang, I kind of missed her whole life until adulthood,’” he reflected, stressing the importance of being present for family milestones.

While Williams did not completely dismiss the possibility of extending his career beyond age 40, he acknowledged that this current contract is likely his last. The agreement includes $37 million in guarantees and a $22 million signing bonus, and he noted that the negotiation process was much smoother compared to his previous contract, which involved a lengthy holdout.

As the upcoming season approaches, Williams is aware of the added challenges, especially with the Los Angeles Rams acquiring two-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. Garrett's impressive record of 23 sacks last season has raised concerns for Williams. “It sucks,” he admitted in response to the Rams' acquisition, highlighting the competitive nature of the league.

Williams is set to face Garrett in the season opener, which will take place in Melbourne, Australia. “The scary part is he’s still a young player. He’s still going to get better,” Williams said, underscoring the formidable challenge ahead. With his recent performance, including his 12th Pro Bowl selection, Williams remains a key player for the 49ers as the season unfolds.
