Troy Stuns Ole Miss in CWS Elimination Game, Thanks to a Comeback Spirit
OMAHA, NE – Steven Meier remained unfazed by the odds. Whether trailing by two runs or four, the Troy baseball team managed to pull off a surprising 12-8 victory against Ole Miss, keeping their hopes alive in the College World Series. Meier, the Trojans' center fielder, was keenly aware of the situation, recalling a similar deficit the team had overcome earlier this season. "It's 6-2. Same score as Miami, same inning, same start. We'll win the game," he told his teammates, as noted by coach Skylar Meade. "I thought I was the only weirdo that remembers those things. Steve, he's our weirdo, you know?”
Although Meier couldn’t finish the game due to an injury, his confident reminder of the team’s resilience proved timely. Troy exploded for four runs in the seventh inning and added another three in the eighth, ultimately eliminating Ole Miss and securing at least two additional days in Omaha. The Trojans will face the loser of the contest between West Virginia and North Carolina.
“We scored runs, but we just couldn’t stop them,” reflected Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco. “They hit a fastball out (of the park), a slider out, and I think a change-up out.” Sean Darnell had a standout performance for Troy, reaching base in all five of his at-bats, including a home run, two singles, a walk, and a hit by pitch, scoring three times and driving in four runs. Jimmy Janicki also contributed with a solo homer that tied the game at 6-6, while Blake Cavill added another long ball.
