Trump Faces Mixed Reception at NBA Finals as Fans React to His Presence

Donald Trump was met with a chorus of boos from the crowd at Madison Square Garden on Monday evening when he appeared on the jumbotron before Game 3 of the NBA finals, where the San Antonio Spurs faced off against the New York Knicks. This marked the Knicks' first finals game since 1999, and Trump was in attendance as a guest of team owner James Dolan.

As the national anthem played, the president, flanked by his granddaughter Kai, was visible for about eight seconds while maintaining a salute and a smile. The crowd's reaction quickly shifted to cheers when the video board showcased Knicks players lined up for the anthem. Trump's presence at such a pivotal game added an unexpected twist to the excitement surrounding the Knicks, who were aiming for a 3-0 series lead after winning the first two games.

Security was notably heightened ahead of the game, with a ten-foot perimeter fence set up around the venue. Fans were urged to arrive early due to strict screening measures akin to those used at TSA checkpoints. Joanne Cadden, a devoted Knicks fan from the Bronx, expressed her frustration, stating, “He could have picked any other day. This night is for the fans.” She criticized the security measures, commenting that the scene felt more like a prison than a sporting event.

While some fans were less critical of Trump's attendance, many felt it altered the festive atmosphere. Rich Becker, a Knicks supporter from Queens who didn't have a ticket, noted that the president's presence changed the day's vibe, especially with the cancellation of the outdoor watch party that had previously attracted many fans. “It changed everything,” he said, suggesting that the extensive security might hinder the game experience for attendees.

The New York Police Department established a “frozen zone” around the arena, restricting access to ticket holders and authorized personnel. This led to the cancellation of the outdoor viewing party outside Madison Square Garden, although other public events in nearby parks were set to proceed as planned. Trump's attendance at the game made him the first sitting U.S. president to do so during an NBA finals, reflecting his longstanding support for the Knicks.

Despite the mixed reception, Trump's appearance served as a reminder of his history as a prominent presence at Knicks games during the 1990s, a time when he was frequently seen courtside. The event also brought together prominent political figures, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who secured a ticket for the game.
