Tupelo 49ers Gear Up for 2026 American Legion Baseball Season

The Tupelo 49ers are gearing up for another exciting summer on the baseball diamond as the American Legion season approaches. Under the guidance of fourth-year coach Russell Bunch, the team is set to showcase its talents once more.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what we can put together,” Bunch remarked, expressing optimism about the upcoming roster. The squad will feature returning players such as Brody Thompson, Jonas Coleman, and Colin Flurry, who all had stints in junior college baseball this past season. They will also welcome Cade Lott from Booneville, Cooper Goff from Mooreville—who recently celebrated a 4A state championship—and standout pitcher and hitter Brody Wilson.

Last year, the 49ers narrowly missed a return to the American Legion World Series after finishing as state runners-up against the Pontotoc Red Sox. “I think they’ve still got a sour taste in their mouths,” Bunch noted. “With the talent we have returning and some new players joining us, I believe we have a solid chance to make a deep run this year.”

The season kicks off with a tournament in Troy, Alabama, from Friday to Sunday. Fans can look forward to key matchups, including a rematch with the Red Sox on June 11 and the annual King City Classic, which will take place from June 26-28, featuring champions from surrounding states like Louisiana and Tennessee.

Bunch emphasized the importance of early-season challenges, stating, “Our guys should be tested early, there’s no doubt.” The state tournament will be hosted at Northeast Mississippi Community College from July 25-27, which may also serve as a venue for some regular-season games, contingent on field conditions. Bunch summed up the team's goal succinctly: “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.” He added, “We had a really good summer last year; we just stumbled there at the end. We need to focus on peaking at the right time.”
