UNC Basketball Recognized for Strong Incoming Transfer Class

With the college basketball season just around the corner, the University of North Carolina is preparing for what fans anticipate will be an exciting campaign under new head coach Michael Malone. The Tar Heels' roster for the 2026-27 season features just four returning players: Jarin Stevenson, Isaiah Denis, Jaydon Young, and Evan Smith.

Stevenson is expected to step into a starting role, while Denis is likely to share point guard duties with Terrence Brown. Young is anticipated to play a significant role off the bench, with Smith potentially seeing minutes late in games when outcomes are determined. A substantial portion of the team will come from transfers, both from other colleges and international programs.

In ESPN's recent rankings of transfer classes, North Carolina has secured an impressive eighth place. "First-year head coach Michael Malone went overseas to secure frontcourt reinforcements, but procured his perimeter group in the portal, and clearly leaned into high-major experience -- including with the ACC-proven Avdalas and Able," noted analyst Jeff Borzello. "Avdalas has shown flashes of first-round potential, while Able seems poised to land in mock drafts after withdrawing this season. Brown is a big-time scorer who has averaged right around 20 points per game at two different programs (FDU before Utah)," he added.

Among the standout transfers, Brown averaged nearly 20 points per game at Utah last season, while Neoklis Avdalas provided versatility at 6'9" with a scoring average of 12.1 points at Virginia Tech. Matt Able, who averaged 8.8 points at NC State, opted out of the NBA Draft following a strong showing at the Combine. Additionally, the team also welcomes Sayon Keita from Mali and Alexandros Samodurov from Greece, who together form a formidable frontcourt duo.

With a wealth of talent now on the roster, the key challenge for North Carolina will be to develop chemistry among the new players. As the season approaches, excitement is building among fans and players alike.
