U.S. Team Optimistic After Narrow Defeat to Germany Ahead of World Cup

CHICAGO (AP) — Antonee Robinson delivered a stunning left-footed strike that found the back of the net, igniting the enthusiasm of a packed Soldier Field crowd. The defender's acrobatic celebration, complete with a cartwheel and backflip, set a positive tone for the United States as they head into the World Cup, despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Germany on Saturday.

This loss marked the ninth consecutive defeat for the U.S. against European teams since 2022, yet there was a sense of optimism surrounding their performance in this final pre-World Cup match. Forward Christian Pulisic reflected on the game, stating, “I mean against a really good team, I thought we were dangerous at times. We had good stretches of possession, defended well for good portions of it. And, yeah, I mean honestly, I think, we’re feeling good.”

Before the match, members of the 1994 U.S. team were honored on the field. Coach Mauricio Pochettino fielded a lineup that is expected to be close to what he will use in the World Cup, with key players like Matt Freese, Sergiño Dest, and Antonee Robinson showcasing their skills. However, the team was without defender Chris Richards, who has been sidelined due to an ankle injury.

In this encounter, the U.S. created several solid scoring chances, primarily through Pulisic and Folarin Balogun. They controlled significant portions of the game, generating ten corner kicks compared to Germany's two. Yet, the team also made critical errors that Pochettino will need to address as they finalize their preparations. Since Pochettino's arrival as coach in October 2024, the U.S. has recorded 14 victories, 10 losses, and two draws.

After an early setback with a goal conceded just two minutes into the match, the U.S. rallied. Antonee Robinson noted, “Disappointed that we lost, but many positives to take. I feel like conceding that early, we could have easily crumbled... But we fought back and at times played some really good football.” Robinson’s impressive goal in the 37th minute stood out as a highlight, drawing comparisons to iconic moments in U.S. soccer history.

Robinson, who fondly refers to himself as “Jedi,” expressed the significance of his goal, stating, “Going into a World Cup it means a lot to have that kind of in my mind that I’ve scored something like that and a bit of freedom to shoot again if I’m in that position.”
