USGA Prepares for US Open at Shinnecock, Learning from Past Challenges
The 126th US Open is set to kick off on Thursday at Shinnecock Hills, a venue that has hosted the championship five times before. Organizers are determined to avoid the pitfalls experienced in the last two tournaments held here, particularly the issues of dry greens that plagued players in 2004 and 2018.
Jeff Hall, the US Golf Association's (USGA) manager of rules and open championships, emphasized the unpredictable nature of Shinnecock, stating, "There's never guarantees about anything. This is Shinnecock. Things change here quickly." Nonetheless, he expressed confidence that the USGA is taking steps to mitigate these challenges.
In both the 2004 and 2018 US Opens, players faced difficult conditions as the course's greens dried out under high winds. During the 2004 event, greens were watered in between groups to maintain playability, leading to discrepancies in conditions between early and late starters. South African golfer Retief Goosen emerged victorious, while Phil Mickelson, who has yet to win the US Open, fell short after a costly three-putt.
In 2018, Brooks Koepka triumphed, but the third round saw players grappling with particularly tough conditions as the greens dried out further. Two-time major champion Zach Johnson remarked, "They've lost the golf course," highlighting concerns over fairness in competition. Former USGA CEO Mike Davis acknowledged the challenges, indicating that some shots were not rewarded due to the course's conditions.
Despite this history of difficulties, Hall reassured that the USGA will maintain the challenging nature of the US Open. "We understand what the US Open is all about, the DNA of the US Open," he noted. "One of the great things about Shinnecock is where it's located. We've got the wind freshening here, and this golf course will test the best players in the world." The impact of natural elements will undoubtedly play a crucial role in determining the championship's outcome.
