USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino 'really sad' over Tottenham's fall
With Tottenham on the brink of relegation from the Premier League, former Spurs boss and current U.S. men's national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed his concerns about the state of the club.
With just four games remaining in the season, Spurs are in the Premier League relegation zone, two points from safety.
The club's awful season has it staring down its first relegation from the top flight since 1977.
"It's really sad. I really love Tottenham, it's always going to be an important part of my life, as a coach and person too," Pochettino said in an interview during The Overlap podcast.
"Really sad because I know the people are suffering there, inside the club and the fans."
The Argentine led Spurs for six seasons, helping the club reach the Champions League final in 2019.
Since Pochettino's departure in 2019, Spurs have had seven permanent managers take the helm, including the recently appointed Roberto De Zerbi.
Pochettino also spoke about some of the highlights of his tenure at Spurs, looking back at the accomplishments they achieved despite limited resources.
"When I was there I tried to explain my vision. We were in a situation that was amazing because we finished the training ground, the stadium, we moved to Wembley to play. At the same time we were very competitive," said Pochettino.
"We were winning every season because with all the circumstances that we were fighting. We spent 18 months without one signing. That was a record in the Premier League.
"Tottenham can say: 'We had money to spend' ... Yes, but not the type of money to improve, to be close to winning. We challenge to win, but we miss this last step."
With the World Cup commencing in a little over a month, Pochettino is preparing to guide the USMNT on home soil.
The Argentinian will see his contract with U.S. Soccer expire at the end of the World Cup. Though his future is still up in the air, he has stated his desire to one day manage again in the Premier League.
