USMNT's Victory Over Paraguay Sets Viewership Records for Fox and Telemundo
The United States men's national soccer team achieved a remarkable 4-1 victory against Paraguay on Friday night during the FIFA World Cup at SoFi Stadium. This match not only showcased the team's prowess on the field but also marked a significant milestone in television viewership for both Fox and Telemundo.
In a statement released prior to the weekend's World Cup matches, Fox disclosed that the game drew an average of 15.986 million viewers across its network and streaming services, including Fox One and Tubi. This viewing figure not only establishes it as the most-viewed USMNT broadcast ever but also claims the title for the highest-rated FIFA Men's World Cup Group Stage match in English-language history. The broadcast reached a peak of 18.86 million viewers between 10:45 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET.
“Historic Night, Historic Audience!” noted Fox Sports PR on social media, celebrating the record-setting viewership. The tweet emphasized that the match was the top USMNT game ever and the second most-watched World Cup match overall, following the 2022 Final.
Meanwhile, Telemundo reported that its Spanish-language coverage of the match attracted an impressive average of 8.9 million viewers across Telemundo, Peacock, and other streaming platforms. This figure makes it the most-watched USA World Cup match in Spanish-language television history, as well as the most-viewed Group Stage match not involving Mexico.
Overall, the combined audience for both broadcasts reached an astounding total of 24.886 million viewers in the United States. It's important to note that this World Cup is the first to utilize the Big Data+ methodology, which typically enhances live viewership figures by about 15%. Nevertheless, these exceptional numbers have undoubtedly left network executives optimistic about the rest of the tournament.
The USMNT will play its next match on Friday, June 19, at 3 p.m. ET (12 p.m. local time in Seattle) against Australia as part of the Group Stage.
