USWNT Claims Narrow Victory Over Brazil in Tumultuous Encounter
FORTALEZA, Brazil (AP) — In a dramatic clash on Tuesday night, the U.S. women's national soccer team secured a 1-0 win against Brazil, courtesy of a second-half own goal. The match was marred by chaos, culminating in eight red cards being issued to Brazilian players and coaching staff.
The uproar began late in the game when Brazil's coach Arthur Elias and three of his assistant coaches were ejected. Brazil's Bia Zaneratto and Tarciane also received red cards, leaving the team with just nine players during stoppage time. Two additional players were penalized after the final whistle.
The decisive moment came in the 63rd minute when a shot from Sophia Wilson ricocheted off Isabela and found its way past Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena, marking the only goal of the match in front of 55,144 spectators. Despite the intense atmosphere, Brazil failed to register any shots on target, while the U.S. managed six.
This game was the second of a two-match series in Brazil for the Americans, who had previously lost 2-1 in their opening match in Sao Paulo. Trinity Rodman joined the action as a substitute to start the second half. Legendary player Marta made her 212th appearance for Brazil, coming onto the field in the 80th minute.
In a concerning moment, Brazilian forward Dudinha was taken off the field on a stretcher after injuring her right knee in a clash with Emily Sonnett. The 20-year-old, who plays for the San Diego Wave, was seen later on crutches.
Historically, Brazil had bested the U.S. in their previous two encounters. Both matches were held in venues that will host next summer's Women's World Cup, with the U.S. aiming to secure qualification starting in late November at the CONCACAF W Championship.
