Utah High School Runners Shine on National Stage with Record-Breaking Performances
Jackson Spencer and Josh Hamblin, two standout track athletes from Utah, delivered remarkable performances at recent prestigious meets, solidifying their status among the nation's elite high school runners. Spencer, a senior at Herriman High and a BYU signee, captured the mile title at the Hoka Festival of Miles in St. Louis, finishing with an impressive time of 3:57.24, which ranks as the fourth-fastest for an American high school athlete.
In a thrilling race, Spencer's time was just shy of the winning mark in the professional category, where the victor clocked 3:57.01. Spencer noted, “I just wish the time was faster,” as he aims to surpass Alan Webb’s long-standing national record of 3:53.43 later this summer.
Hamblin, a senior from Weber High, also shone at the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle, where he secured second place in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 13.24 seconds. This performance places him fifth on the all-time high school leaderboard. The race was dominated by Texas athlete Andrew Jones, who won with a blistering 13.14 seconds, marking the second-fastest time in history.
Additionally, Johnny Parker from Davis High made headlines at the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque, winning the hammer throw with a remarkable distance of 232 feet, 6 inches, breaking the previous record set by his late father, James Parker, in 1994.
Utah's high school track scene continues to flourish, especially in distance races, with 14 of the state’s 18 top-10 marks in these events achieved over the past three years. As athletes like Spencer and Hamblin push the boundaries of performance, Utah’s reputation in the national track and field landscape grows stronger.
