Veteran Signing Ashtyn Davis Poised to Compete for Starting Safety Role with 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have been active this offseason, but their safety position remained a focal point for many fans until a recent addition. General manager John Lynch finally addressed this need last week by signing Ashtyn Davis to a one-year contract. The 29-year-old defensive back is set to begin his seventh NFL season after previously playing five years with the New York Jets and one year with the Miami Dolphins.

Despite the low profile of Davis' signing, former 49ers player Donte Whitner sees potential in this move, suggesting that Davis may be aimed at securing a starting position. On "The Grit Code" podcast, Whitner stated, “I don’t think this move was made for him to be a backup. He’s coming to this team to compete for a starting job… I think this was a move to Ji'Ayir Brown and said 'we gave you two years as a starter. In this third year, we cannot allow you to be a detriment to our success.'”

Ji'Ayir Brown, who is 26, played a significant role last season, participating in 74% of defensive snaps across 17 games. He recorded 76 tackles, two interceptions, six passes defensed, and a forced fumble. However, his performance earned him a Pro Football Focus grade of 61.7, ranking him 62nd out of 98 qualifying safeties.

The 49ers are fostering competition within their safety unit, with Brown, Davis, and Marques Sigle vying for a chance to play alongside Malik Mustapha. The players' performances in training camp and the preseason will ultimately determine who secures the starting spot, regardless of Brown's previous status as a third-round draft pick.
