Vikings Set to Face Packers Without Star Defender Micah Parsons

For only the third time in the last 66 years, the Minnesota Vikings will kick off their season against the Green Bay Packers. However, the Vikings will be facing a significant advantage as the Packers will be without their standout linebacker Micah Parsons, who is sidelined due to ongoing recovery from ACL surgery.

Micah Parsons, a pivotal figure in Green Bay's defense and a five-time Pro Bowler, has been ruled out for the entirety of September as he recovers from surgery that also addressed a meniscus issue. According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Parsons acknowledged that his initial hopes of returning early in the season were unrealistic, stating, “I’m just past the five-month mark from my ACL surgery.” He emphasized that he won’t be cleared for practice until at least nine months post-surgery, which places his potential return in late September at the earliest.

As a result, Parsons is expected to start the season on the physically unable to perform list, meaning he will miss a minimum of four games. This opens the door for either Barryn Sorrell or Brenton Cox Jr. to step in and fill the gap left by Parsons's absence.

While the Packers are known for their careful approach to player recoveries, Minnesota stands to benefit from this situation as they begin their campaign. The Vikings will be facing a depleted Packers squad, which could change the dynamics of their matchup at U.S. Bank Stadium.

In contrast, the Vikings are also monitoring their own injury concerns, particularly left tackle Christian Darrisaw, who is on the mend from a previous ACL tear. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Caleb Banks, a recent draft pick, has dealt with foot injuries but is expected to be ready for training camp.

As the Vikings prepare for the season opener, they will be keenly aware of the implications of facing a Packers team that may also be without key players like tight end Tucker Kraft and running back Josh Jacobs. Despite these challenges, Green Bay remains a slight favorite to win the Week 1 clash against Minnesota.
