VOTE NOW for The Star Press IU Health Athlete of the Week for May 18-23
The time has come again to vote for The Star Press East Central Indiana high school Athlete of the Week, brought to you by IU Health.
The reigning Athlete of the Week is Oaklei Davis of Monroe Central girls track and field. Davis earned all-conference honors in three events at the Mid-Eastern Conference Championships on Friday, May 14, winning the high jump (4-8 feet), shot put (32-11.5 feet) and helping win the 4x100 (53.53 seconds). Davis helped Monroe Central bring home the girls team title with a team score of 118. She received 14,211 votes out of 34,268 votes cast (41.47%).
This week brings us 10 more nominees who had standout performances during the week of May 18-23. To submit nominees for future polls, please email names and any notable statistics or accomplishments to cbhampton@usatodayco.com.

Here's a quick look at this week's nominees:
- Shiloh Bunch, Delta girls track and field: sectional champion in the 800-meter (2:24.18) and 1,600-meter (5:13.72) runs on Tuesday, May 19. Helped Delta win the 4x400 (4:09.02) and the team sectional championship.
- Caroline Wallace, Yorktown girls track and field: Won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash sectional championships on Tuesday, May 19. She set a new school record in the 100-meter with a time of 12.39 seconds and won the 200 in a time of 26.25 seconds.
- Sloane Sanchez, Muncie Burris girls track and field: Sanchez was a regional qualifier in three different events with her performance at the Delta sectional on Tuesday, May 19. She finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.54 seconds and helped the Owls' 4x400 team to another third-place finish (4:19.49). Sanchez was Burris' lone sectional champion, winning the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.48 seconds.
- Ava Cook, Wapahani girls track and field: Cook dominated the 3,200-meter run at the Delta sectional on Tuesday, May 19, finishing first with a time of 12:17.59. She also qualified for a regional in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:37.48, good for a third-place finish.
- Terry Miles, Muncie Central boys track and field: Miles was one of Central's top performers as the Bearcats won the boys team sectional title on Thursday, May 21. He set personal bests in the 400-meter dash (51.07 seconds) and 200-meter dash (23.65 seconds) en route to second and third place finishes, respectively. Miles was also the long jump sectional champion with a leap of 21-3 feet.
- Wyatt Turner, Yorktown boys track and field: Turner became a sectional champion in the 1,600-meter run at the Muncie Central sectional on Thursday, May 21, with a time of 4:33.14. He also anchored the Tigers' 4x800 team that took first place with a time of 8:00.37.
- Mason Tomboni, Wapahani boys track and field: Tomboni set a new personal-best time of 1:59.07 in the 800-meter run to become a sectional champion on Thursday, May 21. He also helped Wapahani qualify for a regional in the 4x400 with a second-place time of 3:29.88.
- Carter Campbell, Winchester boys track and field: Campbell was a regional qualifier in all four events he competed in at the Muncie Central sectional on Thursday, May 21. He placed second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.03 seconds) and anchored the Golden Falcons' second-place 4x100 team (43.92 seconds). Campbell was a sectional champion in the 200-meter dash (22.98 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (39.88 seconds).
- Kate Manor and Alexa Bratton, Delta girls tennis: Delta's No. 1 doubles duo of Manor and Bratton did not drop a single game as the Eagles won a 15th consecutive sectional, winning 6-0, 6-0 against both Muncie Central in the semifinals on Wednesday, May 20, and Yorktown in the championship on Thursday, May 21.
- Claudia Dirksen, Jay County girls tennis: Dirksen helped Jay County win a sixth consecutive sectional title with her play at No. 1 singles. She won 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals against Winchester on Wednesday, May 20, then won 6-2, 6-0 in the championship against Union City on Thursday, May 21.
