Warriors’ Gui Santos Reacts to $15M Contract Extension
Gui Santons signed a three-year, $15 million contract extension with the Golden State Warriors on Saturday, Feb. 28. The third-year forward has emerged as a key member of Steve Kerr's rotation over the past two seasons, showing steady incremental improvements to his game.
When speaking with the media following the Warriors' 129-101 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, where Santos had ended the night with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, the former second-round draft pick detailed what it meant for him to sign his second NBA contract.
"Man, there are a lot of things that come to my mind when you see your work get rewarded," Santos said, via Sam Gordon. "It was a lot of work since I got here through the G League, even before playing in Brazil. All the resources we have, there is not much. And just to make it to the league is a big thing. But to even be able to an extension, with the best organization in the world, that's no words that can describe this feeling... One thing that's really important for me is my family, and you get (to wear) the shirt, and that you're going to be able to help them for you know for long years. So it's just amazing. It's a great feeling."
Santos spent the majority of his rookie season with the Santa Cruz Warriors. He came into the NBA having played as a point guard. Therefore, it took a sizeable adjustment to shift his game into the front court while also learning how to thrive in Kerr's system.
Now, though, the third-year forward has been rewarded for his hard work and the improvements he's made to his game. If he continues to improve month after month, he could find himself enjoying a long career in the Bay Area.
