West Indies Triumph Over Sri Lanka by Seven Wickets in T20 Opener

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — The West Indies secured a seven-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in the opening match of their T20 series on Thursday, thanks to a crucial six from Rovman Powell in the final over. This match was the first of three scheduled encounters between the two teams.

Chasing a target of 148 runs after Sri Lanka posted 147-9, the West Indies had a brisk start, racing to 66 runs in the initial six overs. However, the run rate slowed down, leaving them needing 20 runs off the last 20 balls. They found themselves in a tight spot, needing a run a ball from the last nine deliveries, but Powell's decisive hit brought the home side to a total of 149-3 with four balls to spare.

Shai Hope, the captain and opener, played a pivotal role in the victory, remaining not out on 65 runs. On the other side, Sri Lanka's innings saw Kamindu Mendis leading with 51 runs, while captain Kusal Mendis contributed 36 runs. It is noteworthy that the two Mendis players are not related.

West Indies bowlers Jason Holder and Shamar Joseph were instrumental in their team's success, each taking three wickets. Holder expressed satisfaction with the performance, stating, “It was a really good bowling performance and credit to our bowlers. We always think about getting wickets in the dressing room. I was thinking to attack."

This match follows Sri Lanka's earlier win in a rain-affected ODI series, where they secured a 1-0 victory after two matches were washed out. The remaining T20 matches will take place at Sabina Park in Kingston on Saturday and Sunday.
