Wheelersburg Softball Clinches Regional Title with Dramatic Comeback
ATHENS — In a thrilling extra-inning showdown at Ohio University, the three-time state champion Wheelersburg softball team overcame a two-run deficit with just three outs left, defeating Tusky Valley 7-6 to secure the Division V regional championship on May 30. The Pirates (21-5) staged a remarkable rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs to claim victory against the Trojans (24-5). “Nobody deserved to lose that game,” commented Wheelersburg head coach Teresa Ruby, reflecting on the intense competition.
Tusky Valley's junior right-hander Brennen Reichman, who has committed to Ohio State, and Wheelersburg's Emmee Eaton each pitched the entire nine innings, showcasing their skills throughout the game. Eaton earned the win, striking out seven, while Reichman, who recorded ten strikeouts, took the loss. The game was dominated by pitching early on, with Tusky Valley struggling to break through against Eaton until late in the match.
After being held scoreless and hitless for the first five innings, Tusky Valley's offense finally came alive, racking up six runs in the final four frames. They managed to narrow Wheelersburg’s early lead with key hits from Hallee Borell and Calli Stutz, who both contributed to a sixth-inning rally that cut the score to 3-2. Borell’s two-RBI double in the seventh even put Tusky Valley ahead 4-3, but Wheelersburg responded with a run of their own to tie the game at 4-4, forcing extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, Tusky Valley regained the lead with a couple of crucial hits, but Wheelersburg wasn't finished. Jalynn Drake’s two-RBI double tied the game at 6-6, and Makenzie Mullens then delivered the decisive blow with a walk-off RBI double, sealing the win for the Pirates. “It’s not how we wanted it to end,” said Tusky Valley head coach Staci Martin, expressing pride in her team’s performance despite the loss.
With this victory, the second-ranked Wheelersburg team advances to the Division 5 state tournament, where they will face fourth-ranked Casstown Miami East in a semifinal match scheduled for June 6 at Akron’s Firestone Stadium. Meanwhile, Tusky Valley, which made history by advancing further in tournament play than any previous team, looks forward to next season with a talented roster, including standout pitcher Reichman. “These girls worked hard and they deserve to be here,” Martin noted, hopeful for the future.
