Wyndham Clark Thrives at Shinnecock as Conditions Favor Afternoon Players
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Anticipations ran high for a challenging day at Shinnecock Hills, with predictions of strong winds and difficult playing conditions. However, the reality proved to be less daunting than expected, allowing Wyndham Clark to excel. After completing 16 holes at six under par, the reigning U.S. Open champion holds a four-stroke lead heading into Friday morning, with just two holes remaining.
Clark's impressive performance was mirrored by several other competitors, including Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, and Matt Fitzpatrick, all sitting at two under par. The USGA played a crucial role in the day's results by softening the greens, counteracting the anticipated high winds. A two-hour fog delay also contributed to more favorable conditions, leading to a calm atmosphere that benefitted the afternoon players.
One of Clark's standout moments came on the par-5 fifth hole, showcasing his skill and composure. After experiencing a challenging period following his 2023 victory at Los Angeles Country Club, Clark has recently regained his form, highlighted by a win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and strong finishes at both the Memorial and RBC Canadian Open.
Grouped with fellow past U.S. Open champions Johnson and Gary Woodland, all three players displayed excellent golf. Johnson's impressive streak of four consecutive birdies was marred by a late double-bogey, leaving him four shots behind Clark. Woodland also found success with a series of late birdies, completing his round at two under.
As the sun set over Shinnecock Hills, the players were eager to take advantage of the gentle conditions but had to halt play as darkness fell. Some opted to complete their current holes, including Clark, while others, like Johnson and Rahm, chose to wait until Friday. The morning players faced significantly tougher winds earlier in the day, highlighting the contrasting experiences on the course. With the USGA likely to toughen the greens in anticipation of Friday's play, Clark's strategic advantage could be pivotal as the tournament progresses.
