Yankees Fall Short Against Athletics Despite Late Rally
On Saturday night, the New York Yankees struggled offensively, ultimately falling to the Oakland Athletics by a score of 6-4. This loss came after an impressive week in which they scored a remarkable 34 runs.
Ryan Weathers had a mixed performance on the mound, surrendering five runs on six hits, including three home runs, while striking out ten and walking three over 6.2 innings of work. He started off on a rough note, giving up a two-run homer to Shea Langeliers that put the Athletics ahead 2-0 early. After a shaky first, Weathers settled in, posting a five-pitch, 1-2-3 inning in the second and allowing only one hit through the fifth. However, the sixth inning saw him concede a solo homer to Tyler Soderstrom, extending Oakland's lead to 3-1. Weathers remained on the mound despite his pitch count exceeding 100, but the decision proved costly when Nick Kurtz hit a two-run shot, concluding Weathers' night.
The Yankees managed to score in the fourth inning, capitalizing on two errors by Oakland. Center fielder Henry Bolte misplayed a single from Jazz Chisholm Jr., allowing Cody Bellinger to advance to third. Chisholm then stole second, and a throwing error from Langeliers allowed Bellinger to score, trimming the Athletics' lead to 2-1.
In the fifth inning, Aaron Judge nearly leveled the score, but his powerful hit fell just short, caught at the wall by right fielder Colby Thomas. New York found themselves in another scoring opportunity in the seventh, but Ryan McMahon's single was followed by two unsuccessful at-bats from José Caballero and Anthony Volpe, ending the inning without further scoring.
The Athletics extended their lead to 6-1 in the eighth, as reliever Jake Bird struggled, allowing a hit-by-pitch and a double before conceding an RBI-single to Zack Gelof.
Amed Rosario was absent from the lineup and will remain out on Sunday after being placed on the paternity list prior to the game. The standout player of the night was Nick Kurtz, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. J.T. Ginn also impressed with a solid outing, allowing just one unearned run over six innings.
The Yankees will conclude their three-game series against the Athletics on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 4:05 p.m. Will Warren (6-1, 3.55 ERA) will take the mound for New York, while Oakland has not yet announced their starting pitcher.
