Yankees’ Veteran Paul Goldschmidt Shines Amid Friendly Teasing
TORONTO — As a Yankees team dinner came to a close on a recent off day, Ben Rice playfully asked Paul Goldschmidt, “Dad, can we get dessert?” The 38-year-old Goldschmidt, the oldest member of the team, chuckled at the light-hearted jab from his younger teammate, who is 11 years his junior. Such friendly banter is common in the Yankees clubhouse, where Goldschmidt has become a cherished figure since joining the team in 2025. Teammate Jasson Dominguez affectionately referred to him as “Young Goldie,” affirming, “He’s still got it.”
Goldschmidt certainly showcased his talent once again during a recent game, marking his 20th consecutive start. He delivered a pivotal two-run homer in the ninth inning, leading the Yankees to a 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays. “They can call me whatever they want,” Goldschmidt said, emphasizing his affection for the team. “We have fun with each other and give each other a hard time. That’s because it’s a close group here, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable to be able to come through there in the ninth and get a hit that puts us ahead.”
Initially starting the season as a bench player, Goldschmidt’s fortunes changed when Giancarlo Stanton went on the injured list in late April. With increased playing time, he has excelled, boasting a .333 batting average with eight home runs and 28 RBIs in 35 games since April 26. In a tense ninth inning, Goldschmidt, who was 0-for-3, managed to hit a towering 403-foot homer off Blue Jays closer Louis Varland, who had an impressive 0.49 ERA at that point. “I kind of joked in my head before that at-bat, ‘He hasn’t given up a run in forever, maybe today will be the day,’” Goldschmidt reflected. “Fortunately, I was able to get him.”
Manager Aaron Boone praised Goldschmidt’s impact on the team, particularly during a challenging period marked by injuries to several key players, including Aaron Judge and Stanton. “I understand how important he’s been,” Boone stated. “It’s just fun to watch him play at a really high level.” Goldschmidt's resilience has been crucial for the Yankees as they navigate a season fraught with setbacks.
The Yankees are hopeful that as the season progresses, they can provide Goldschmidt with some rest while continuing to rely on his veteran presence. Reflecting on his performance and the importance of wins, Goldschmidt remarked, “I just want to try to help us win, so obviously winning and having success is more fun than losing and getting out.”
