Young Golfer Miles Russell Achieves Historic Feat at U.S. Open
Miles Russell, a remarkable 17-year-old from Jacksonville Beach, Florida, has made headlines at the 2026 U.S. Open by successfully making the cut. According to NBC, Russell is now recognized as the second-youngest male amateur to advance past the cut in this prestigious tournament since World War II.
Russell concluded the first two rounds at 3-over par, just one stroke shy of the cutline set at plus-4, placing him in a tie for 46th alongside renowned golfer Dustin Johnson and a dozen others at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. The record for the youngest amateur to make the cut since the war still belongs to Beau Hossler, who was 17 years old in 2012, but about four months younger than Russell.
This achievement adds to Russell's growing list of accolades; he previously became the youngest player to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at just 15 years old in 2024. Last year, he also made history by being the first player to win the Junior Players Championship twice. Having committed to play for Florida State University, Russell currently holds the top spot in the Rolex American Junior Golf Association Rankings.
During the U.S. Open, Russell shot a 2-over 72 in the first round, followed by a 1-over 71 in the second round, demonstrating consistency with three birdies and six bogeys over the two days.
While the U.S. Open attracts many amateurs, few manage to continue past the initial rounds. Out of 20 amateurs competing this year, only a select few made the cut, underscoring the challenge of this major tournament. Last year's amateur, Justin Hastings, finished tied for 55th but did not earn any prize money as an amateur.
Among the other amateurs who made the cut this year are Ryder Cowan, who is tied for 10th, Jackson Koivun, Marek Fleming, and Eric Lee, each showcasing their talent on a significant stage.
