Zionsville Overcomes Early Struggles to Claim Sectional Championship
NOBLESVILLE --- Zionsville's Davis Moore faced a challenging start in Monday's Class 4A Sectional 8 title match against Fishers, with the game beginning with a three-up, three-down inning. However, the pitcher soon found himself in a tough spot as he allowed a single to David Pina, followed by a walk and two hit batters, resulting in an early run for the Tigers. In an effort to regain composure, Zionsville's coach and father, Jered Moore, made a visit to the mound.
Despite the pep talk, Moore struggled as Henry Cherry capitalized on a fastball, sending it to the left field fence for a two-run hit that tied the game at three. After that setback, Moore managed to settle down, allowing only two batters to reach base for the remainder of his outing, while Ayden Keith stepped in to secure the last four outs, leading Zionsville to a 4-3 victory.
Zionsville's record now stands at 16-14 as they prepare to take on Harrison (19-10) in the regional championship on Saturday. "I couldn't just throw a strike and let them hit it," Moore reflected on his rocky second inning. "I'm just glad I have that defense behind me, so when I do throw a strike, I know they're going to make a play." Moore's final stats included three runs allowed on two hits and two walks, along with four strikeouts over 5⅔ innings. Keith earned a save by pitching 1⅓ hitless innings and striking out two.
The Tigers of Fishers, also at 16-14, faced challenges of their own, particularly in the first inning where pitcher Owen Lukac slipped while fielding a bunt, leading to a run. A pick-off attempt that went awry further compounded their troubles. Reliever Austin Conley stepped in during the second inning, effectively silencing the Eagles’ offense with seven strikeouts over five innings.
Despite the loss, Fishers coach Matthew Cherry commended his team's persistence, noting, "They didn't quit... We made some adjustments midseason and they really bought into it." For Zionsville, this sectional title marks a significant achievement in what has been a tumultuous season, featuring an early 7-1 record followed by a tough stretch of six losses in seven games. Camden Moore’s second-inning RBI single ultimately proved decisive, with both Reid Zittel and Liam Salapka contributing two hits each. Davis Moore expressed a strong bond with his teammates, saying, "This team is the best team I've ever played with... We're playing our hearts out and that's what matters."
